3 Amazing Beaches in Garut You’d Be Eager to Visit

Garut is a regency in West Java, Indonesia. It’s also known as diamond city. You will certainly never find any diamond mine in Garut like somewhere in Africa depicted in a movie like ‘Blood Diamond’ starred by Lenardo di Caprio. The word diamond is a metaphor of the beauty of Garut. A version is told that the word diamond once came out from Queen Beatrix from Holland when she was astounded by the beauty of Garut landscape seen from a highland.

1 Santolo

If you want to enjoy Kuta beach like the old days when hotels and pubs were far less in quantity, come to Santolo Beach; a port of local fishermen. Enjoying sunrise is a pretty quite situation and a crowning moment. White sands, reefs and the clear blue sea dominate the panorama. In addition to the panorama, the great waves of java sea smash the reef barriers scattered along the shore. Check the other side of the coast and enjoy an estuary and a lagoon. This estuary is callled Cilauteureun where seawater flow to freshwater river; the unique phenomenon occurred only in Indonesia and France. Rent a fisherman boat to see magnificent natural vista of the coast, find a snorkeling spot or you can cross by boat to visit a small island called Santolo island. A camping ground is available in the island. 

After a tired 8 to 9 hours journey from Jakarta to Santolo, consider a place to stay. Variable rates of hotels are  available from approximately IDR 100K to 300K. Seafood restaurant and souvenir shops are around the area. For alternative meals, buy a fresh fish from a local auction and cook it by yourself.

2 Sayang Heulang

Sayang Heaulang beach is located next to Santolo beach. The name of the beach is literary means eagle’s nest. High waves, up to 2 meters, smashing the reefs; are signature scene of Sayang Heulang beach. Surfing is allowed, but only for experts. Standing on the cliffs and rocks around the beach provide a variety of point of view and you might want to take a picture of beautiful sunset. Watch for the corals and the waves when swimming at the shore.

Sayang Heulang is 87 km from Garut. Take an accomodation in Santolo and travel to Sayang Healang which is near from Santolo.

3 Rancabuaya

Rancabuaya is 100 km away from the center of Garut. Crystal blue water, soft white sand corals are main features of the beach. Tropical trees and gazebos complete the view of the area. Cultural ceremony is held annually in this area and, according to their belief, the offerings in the ceremony are presented with a hope that their catch would be extravagant. Decent hotels are available in this area and they’re cheap too.

Cilauteureun means 'the sea water that stops'.
